Garden accounts for a growing share of sales

Garden products account for an increasingly large proportion of the sales of German DIY stores. The share of garden ranges in the total sales of home improvement retailing in Germany rose by 27.6 per cent in the first six months of 2017, as compared with 26.9 per cent in the same period in 2016. For 2016 as a whole, the garden segment was responsible for 22.4 per cent of overall sales. These figures were presented by Detlef Riesche, CEO of Toom Baumarkt and spokesman for the board of the German industry association BHB, at the BHB Garden Summit in Cologne last week. A similar trend picture is outlined by the market research company GfK, although GfK's figures do not include the garden furniture product category. According to its survey, the sales of garden ranges in German DIY stores in the first half of 2017 amounted to € 2.4 bn, an increase of 5.1 per cent over the same period in the previous year. By contrast, the overall sales of the DIY stores only grew by 1.6 per cent. Plants continue to be the biggest-selling product group in the garden ranges of DIY stores, bringing in more than € 640 mio. This group also made the biggest contribution to the growth in garden sales at 1.6 per cent.
